The community of Folsom came together for the up keep of Folsom Trails on Nov 5th 2011 and met all the goals set out for that day. Over fifty volunteers showed up and laid irrigation lines, planted trees, built split rail fence, laid mulch, and picked up trash from the Humbug Creek. Volunteers enjoyed the friendship and the crisp fall morning. Friends of Folsom Parkways thank the City of Folsom, REI co-sponsoring the event and for the free T-shirts, food and beverages and also all the volunteers for their work.

Bidwell/Willow Creek Trail - Troop 1855

When Boy Scouts of America Folsom Unit Troop 1855 wanted to plant some trees in May of this year as part of their Adopt a Creek and Trail commitment, the City Arborist Ken Menzer agreed to it if they were also going to care for them during the summer months. Since the plants would not have irrigation system, they need once a month Driwater gel replacement and watering. Scout Owen C. agreed to take the ownership of this responsibility.

Ever since, each month Owen has been working with the city to get the Driwater gels and recruit other scouts from his troop to replace the gels and water the plants. Since there is no water outlet nearby the scouts have been using buckets to collect water from the adjacent Willow Creek and water the plants. They plan to continue this effort until the rains start in November and nature take care of the plants.

As noted in an earlier blog posting Troop 1855 (http://troop1855.org) have as part of the Adopt a Creek and Trail (ACT) program adopted Willow Creek Trail and Humbug Creek Trail segments between E. Bidwell St and Riley St. They are planning to participate in the REI day on Nov 5th to continue with their trail segment care.

Boy Scout Troop 1855 as part of the Adopt a Creek & Trail program planted 22 trees on May 22, 2011 along Willow Creek Trail at E. Bidwell St. Early this year the troop adopted both the Willow Creek and Humbug Creek trails between E. Bidwell and Riley St.

Under the guidance of the City Arborist Mr. Ken Menzer the boys learned how to plant these trees and the use of the innovative Dry Water Gel product that provides the moisture for the newly planted trees.

The boy scouts plan to replenish the Dry Water gels on a monthly basis until the trees no longer need them.

Check out the photos of the planting event at http://www.troop1855.org/image/tid/1161

The troop plans to plant more trees later in the fall.

Here is an excerpt from a recent REI Newsletter highlighting the grant made to Friends of Folsom Parkways:

Friends of Folsom Parkways will use REI’s grant to support volunteer participation in developing the El Dorado Trail, a new walking and bicycle path connecting the City of Folsom Trail network with other regional trails. When completed, the El Dorado Trail will connect trails from metropolitan Sacramento to trails from El Dorado County. REI funds will support volunteer efforts and will provide trail design and supplies. The project will be launched with a walk of the envisioned
trail alignment including a plant and animal survey. This will be followed in by a final trail design, trail surfacing, a trail signing and a trail appreciation hike.

Friends of Folsom Parkway’s mission is to make the citizens of Folsom aware of the parkways, raise funds for parkway development, work to educate the community on parkway issues, work to influence development proposals to the benefit of the parkways, and work to identify areas of Folsom worthy of inclusion in the parkway
system.
